by Erik Scott de BieJust a short story but a bloody good one ! I wanted to get back into the Realms and didn't fancy going back to one of the many books I've started over the last few years. Drizzt hasn't really grabbed me since The Thousand Orcs (although I might try The Lone Drow again soon) and when Paul S. Kemp's brilliant Cale series came to an end I tried other Realms stories but they didn't grab me as Kemp's stories were so good. I've got all the realms books and with the 4e and Spellplague there were too many to read in order so I didn't know which to read next. I stumbled upon Erik Scott De Bie's blog and, like Kemp had done years ago, he went into a bit of detail about his character and talked about his books in a proud way. It felt like he'd created some characters and written a story around them not, as so often happens in shared world fiction, the other way around. I just finished reading this prequel (which is free from WOTC) and am going to go straight on into Downshadow and see how it goes.
